Things have been very different for students this year. The majority of lectures have been held online, meaning your bedroom has become a place you sleep and learn. And let’s not forget that pub quizzes and nights out have been off the cards for quite some time.
As the restrictions are taking a gradual step towards easing, we’re sure you can’t wait to restore a sense of normality – whether it be meeting up with your course mates for a coffee and catch-up or inviting friends round to your student accommodation for a takeaway. But the question is, is your accommodation ready for visitors? Do check devonwick.com/collections/wax-melters.
Here we offer a few top tips on how to make your student room feel warm and welcoming – without leaving you strapped for cash:
1.Rearrange your room
Typically, all of the rooms at university halls are laid out in the same way and are furnished with the basics – unless you’re staying at McComb Students’ student accommodation in Ormskirk, that is. All of their rooms come with a host of high-quality pieces, including a ¾ or double bed, wardrobe, flat-screen TV and desk!
If your room is on the small side, or the wardrobe is far too heavy to lift unaided, you might struggle to arrange the furniture in any other way. However, if you can shuffle things around – even just a little – this is a great way to make it your own. And creating a separate sleeping space and study space could help with stress and insomnia.
2.Improve the smell
From overflowing bins in the shared kitchen to sweaty sports kits in the laundry room and the smell of burnt food wandering down the hall, student accommodation doesn’t always smell the nicest.
But even if your accommodation doesn’t smell too bad, adding fresh aromas can really give your digs a more homely feel. Take scented candles and wax melts, for instance. Or, if candles aren’t allowed for safety reasons, you could get a diffuser, potpourri or a plug-in air freshener. It’s always worth keeping a room spray handy too to mask nasty odours on the spot!
3.Treat yourself to some soft furnishings
Whilst most people buy new bed linen before they head off to university, some pack their favourite ones to bring them some comfort when they feel homesick. However, if your room gets a little chilly in the night or you don’t fancy turning the heating up, it’s worth splashing out on a thicker duvet – preferably one with a high tog rating.
Aside from enhancing comfort, a couple of extra soft furnishings (i.e. new bedding, attractive cushions, throws and curtains) can also give your student room a more cosy vibe – without blowing your student loan.
4.Display photos of your loved ones
It’s worth checking what the rules are at your student accommodation first, but a brilliant way to make your room more homely is to stick photographs and posters on the walls using blu tac. You could also drape fairy lights above your bed and use pegs to attach photos.
If none of these are viable options, most rooms come with a noticeboard that you can use to pin up your timetable or calendar. Perhaps you could add photos here as well? But failing that, you can’t go wrong with framed photos – either on your desk or beside your bed.
We’ve only scratched the surface here, and we’re sure you’ve got your own brilliant ideas on how to transform your room at uni. But it just goes to show that you don’t need to break the bank to give your student accommodation a more cosy, at-home vibe. If you’d like to secure luxury student accommodation in Ormskirk for 2021/22, be sure to contact McComb Students – but be quick as their rooms won’t be available for long!
