At the west Texas fair and Rodeo Abilene, a Texas Bronc Rider died in accident. Currently the rider’s family sharing the story of his life, what was his dream, how talented he was and how they hope to use his name to help other people in the rodeo.
His name was Skee Burkes, he was 26 years old when he was bucked off a horse on September 9. He fell down on the ground while riding a horse, the horse stepped on his head He died because he was injured badly. His mother’s name is Dee Ann Littlefield, she said Her son was very talented and he worked as an oilfield supervisor. He used to make custom leather work, rode horses. He was also a singer; he sang on stage at Blue Light.
His mother, Dee said,” he looked forward to every day because of something the day might bring and he would get more out of everyday then any one of us would get out of a single week.”
According to his mother, Dee, her son, Skee has a big personality which carried into everything he did, he was a very happy person and he had a friendly nature, he had many friends even he was friend to everyone.
His sister’s name is Kalico Burkes, she also praised her brother very much as she has heard many stories of her brother, how her brother went above in the comparison of other people.
His sister, Kalico Burkes said,” everyone is saying, he is one of a kind, he was one of kind, just solidifies everything that we know about him.”
According to his sister Kalico Burkes, her brother’s passion was bronc riding, when he was a child, he would pretend to be a bronc rider.
His Sister Kalico Burkes said,” I think once he got older, he had such long leg, I think that is when he started thinking oh, I think I can bronc rider.”
The Dead Bronc Rider, Skee Burkes was belong to Henrietta, Texas. He completed his high school education from there, and it was also the same place where he goat on his first ranch Bronc in High School.
His mother Littlefield said,” he wrote about coming out of chute number four is his favourite place in Texas”.
According to his mother Littlefield, for her son, the west Texas fair and Rodeo night was going to be a normal right. However, the tragedy of his death does not reflect how he rode or how he was. However, he was doing Bronc riding for around 10 years.
According to his mother Littlefield, her son had been doing this for 10 years, he was a winner, he has won a lot of belt buckles bronc riding. He was an incredible horseman. Indeed, this was a truly freak accident.
His mother was not present there at that time. She received a phone call, through which she came to know that he had been kicked in the head and injured badly.
His mother Littlefield said,” as a mother, your children are tethered to your heart and your soul, I felt him gone, I felt him gone then.”
later she came to know that her son was bucked off and the horse stepped on his head, this was the reason of his death.
His sister Kalico said that she had heard the rodeo continued because this was the wish of her brother and he would have wanted it. She said,” I agree, I think that my brother would have Wanted the show to go on and everyone to continue to honour him”.
His mother Littlefield and his sister Kalico have become a support for each other, there belief would definitely help them to get through this is very difficult time of their life as they lost their dear son and brother.
Both mother and sister believe that Skee has gone from this Earth only, he still lives in their heart. He has gone on to serve an even bigger purpose. According to his mother and sister Skee is still there with them.
A fundraiser for Skee Burkes’ family has been set up by the west Texas fair and Rodeo and Taylor County Expo Centre board of directors.
About that his mother said, “the money will go toward funeral expenses and anything left over will be put toward a Rodeo scholarship in his honour.”
