SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination is one of the prestigious exams in the country for which several lakhs of candidates get prepared every year. This exam, which is conducted under the governance of the Staff Selection Commission, has four stages. Tier-1, 2 & 4 are conducted online, whereas Tier 3 is considered to be an offline descriptive exam.
SSC CGL Tier-1
The inception stage consists of four segments containing 100 questions with a total weighting of 200 marks. You will have 25 questions carrying 50 marks for all four segments i.e. General Awareness, English Language, General Intelligence, and Reasoning & Quantitative Aptitude. This is very important to qualify in this segment of the examination as only the qualifying candidates will get an opportunity to appear for the Tier-2 exam. In order to prepare for it in a better way, one can refer to the question papers of previous years.
SSC CGL Tier-2
In this segment, there would be 4 sections to be precise. The paper-1 would comprise of questions that would test your knowledge of Quantitative abilities; this section will have 100 questions carrying 200 marks. The next paper would be for English language and comprehension carrying the weight of 200 marks for 200 questions. Next will be the paper related to statistics, which will again be of 200 marks and the number of questions would be 100. In the last paper, you will be tested in regards to General Studies (Finance & Economics). Therefore, in total, you will have to cover 800 marks divided into 500 questions.
SSC CGL Tier-3
This is the third stage of the selection procedure. People who would qualify in the first and second segments of the exam will appear for this phase. This exam will test your ability to write Essay, Precis, Letter, Application, etc. You can write using either English or Hindi. This is an off-line exam and carries a total of 100 marks. In order to qualify in this segment, you need to have a free flow of thought and adequate knowledge of the topic or subject. You must also have sufficient vocabulary to crack this exam.
One important thing that one must remember is that you will get 1 hour of time in order to complete your writing. Hence, you need to absolutely well equipped with regards to writing as well as time management.
SSC CGL Tier-4
Once the tier-2 and tier-3 stages are cleared, a candidate can opt for the Tier-4 stage. This exam comprises of Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) and Computer Proficiency Test (CPT). If you are applying for positions of Assistant Section Officer of CSS, Assistant Section Officer (MEA), Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and Assistant in the Ministry of Mines, you need to go through the Computer Proficiency Test. On the other hand, if you are opting for Tax Assistants (Central Excise & Income Tax), Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) will be applicable for you.
In this regard, we must also understand that all the stages of the SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination are important and will be judged on the basis of CGL merit list. In general, tier-1, tier-2 & tier-3 marks are added and the cut-off is prepared accordingly. Therefore, without any doubt, you need to secure a good score in each of the segments.
