Restless Leg Syndrome

Moving your legs is good exercise and it enhances your neurological health. However, it will no longer be part of your exercise when you experience a powerful urge to move your legs when you should be resting. Also called the Willis-Ekbom disease, restless leg disease syndrome (RLS) is a nervous system condition that causes your legs to have powerful sensations.

RLS is one of those disorders that makes you feel exhausted, sleepy, and can extensively affect your concentration and overall performance. You are likely to experience the symptoms in the evening or late afternoon, with symptoms worsening in severity during the night. As a result, you will find it impossible to fall asleep or return to sleep after you have woken up. Your doctor will recommend prescription medications like dopamine agonists and advise you on various home remedies like massages, exercises, relaxation techniques, and warm baths to minimize sensations.

Leg Swelling

Your legs are likely to swell for various reasons including venous insufficiency, salt retention, medication side effects, and congestive heart failure. You might not need to see a specialist if your legs swell, mainly when the weather is hot or trivial injuries. However, you should contact your doctor when:

·         You are pregnant and experiencing swollen legs.

·         You suspect yourself of having deep vein thrombosis.

·         The pain is severe.

·         You notice skin changes.

·         The swelling causes you to have a high temperature.

During diagnosis, your doctor will assess the swelling and ask for more information. He will want to know if the swelling hurts and when it started. The care provider will then examine other areas including your chest and groin. If necessary, your doctor will request various tests, including urine tests, this looks out for proteins that could suggest kidney problems or an ultrasound scan establishing the swelling’s origin. After diagnosis, your doctor will devise a treatment plan depending on your cause.

Leg Wounds

Leg wounds or ulcers usually occur when your leg’s skin breaks allowing bacteria and air into your underlying tissues. A wound results from a minor injury that breaks your skin, you should expect the wound to heal in approximately two weeks without difficulty. However, your skin will have problems healing and your breakdown area is likely to increase in size if you have an underlying condition. Your wound may take longer to heal if it is far from your heart, especially if you are over 50years and have a health condition like a venous disease.

During treatment, your doctor will first determine the root cause of the wound. After diagnosis, he might recommend treatments including wound care, exercises, and a healthy diet.

Vascular and venous conditions can interfere with your blood circulation and deprive your body parts of oxygenated blood. Contact your doctor when you suspect yourself of any disease that could be related to your veins and arteries. Schedule an appointment today for more information.
