When you go overlanding, there are numerous wonderful routes that you may take. Overlanding is all about traveling through beautiful landscapes, which is why scenic routes are always the best.
One of these routes includes the Pamir Highway, whose beauties are there for every overlander to see. If you are passing through there, here are some of the stops that you’ll want to make.
1. The Nurek Lake
If you start your trip from Dushanbe, then you will come across Nurek Lake on the first day of your trip. Indeed, the highway is not extremely close to the lake – but still, you’ll get a spectacular view. It’s particularly stunning in the spring since you have a lot of greenery around.
2. Wakhan Valley
Do you want to see nature in its full glory? Then you certainly need to go through the Wakhan Valley. This narrow strip that goes all the way from Afghanistan to China has some superb mountains with several fortresses standing on top of the hills. You can make one stop at Langar within the valley to replenish your goods.
3. Yashikul and Bulunkul Lakes
A little before you enter Murghab, you can come across two lakes: Yashikul and Bulunkul. Part of Tajikistan, these lakes are truly beautiful and will tickle your scenic sense. You can spend the day hiking the area, take some breathtaking pictures, and simply enjoy looking at the snowy peaks in the backdrop of the lake. If it gets late, you may easily spend the night at Bulunkul Village, but make sure that you layer up. It’s known as the 6th coldest spot on Earth.
4. Karakul Lake
Do you want to see even more natural beauties? In that case, as you are going through the Ak Baital pass, you may come across Karakul. This lake is very famous for the fact that during summer it takes on a very beautiful blue color. This area is also camping-friendly – so, if you wish to set down your tents, you may easily do so. That being said, if spending the night outside is not your thing, or if it’s too cold, there are still some homestays where you can get a warm bed for the night.
5. Sary Tash
If you are passing through Kyrgyzstan on the Pamir Highway, you might also want to make a stop at Sary Tash. This lovely village located in the Alay Valley is quite a scenic one and is located conveniently enough for you to go on treks and trips. You may easily replenish your resources here and, once everything is settled, you can see all the spots that this place has to offer. You have mountains galore, turquoise lakes, green lush valleys, and other beautiful attractions. It is certainly not a site to miss.
The Bottom Line
The Pamir Highway has a lot to offer for travel-enthusiasts seeking beauty and adventure. From mountains to valleys, lakes, and cozy towns, this highway is a treat for those looking for a getaway.
