Knowing the rules and the regulations are the key to that specific thing. If you are a basketball lover, then, you need to know the main rules of this game. You cannot play a specific game if you have no idea about the key rules, only a true game lover knows the worth of them. Basketball is the third most popular game around the world with almost 2.5 billion fans.
The rules and the regulations of this game were first made by James Naismith on 15 January, 1892. But the fact is that the game played according to those rules was quite different from the one that is being played now. During that time, dribbling, short clock and goaltending were the part of the game but now some of them are followed and some are not.
Here, we are going to discuss the main rules of basketball for both defense and offense, as they should be remembered by the players.
Rules for basketball:-
First of all, the rules of basketball depend upon the play, as the rules of the college play differ from the rules of the professional play. Apart from this, they also depend upon the region where it is being played, for instance the international rules of this game differ from the rules that are followed in the USA. But these rules are only the alterations, most of them are followed during this game are the same all around the world. Just like the other games, the team who scores the most, grabs the trophy! Whenever a player passes the ball from the basket of the opponent team, the team of that player gets a point.
Let’s discuss the rules of the offense and the defense.
Rules of the defense:-
The defense team is the one who doesn’t have the basketball.
1st rule: The main and foremost rule for every defense player is that they have to avoid foul. When a player gains an unjust advantage by physical contact, it is considered as foul. In simple words, a defense player must not touch an opponent in order to make them miss their shot or goal.
Rules for the offense:-
There are 5 main rules for the offense players, and here are they:-
1st rule: The offense team is the one who has the basketball. The player of the offense team has to dribble the ball, using his one hand and he must keep on moving his both feet during this. But in case, the player stops bouncing the ball or he touches his both hands with the ball, in this position the player must keep on moving his one foot.
2nd rule: The player has only one chance to dribble the ball, in case he stops dribbling, he cannot start another dribble. If a player dribbles the ball again, he is called for a double dribble violation and then he has to hand over the ball to the other team. At this point, the player of the offense teams can only start dribbling if the player of the other team touches the ball and it is after a shot.
3rd rule: The offense team must not lose the control of the ball, if they do so, the other team will get the ball or they will gain the control of the ball. So the offense team must stay bound to the ball, in order to keep it to themselves.
4th rule: The other rule of playing basketball for the offense team is that they must dribble the ball by touching its upper surface, if the player touches the lower surface of the ball, it is considered as if he is holding the ball, and the ball is automatically handed over to the opponent team. This is the important and a sensitive point that must be kept under consideration while playing.
5th rule: While playing, once the offensive team crosses the half court limit, they cannot go back, if they do so, that will be considered as backcourt violation. But, if any player of the defense team touches the ball in the backcourt, then the offense team can get the ball back according to the rule.
These were some rules for the offense and the defend players but apart from this, there are some rules for everyone too, which means that those must be followed by both the teams i.e. the offense and the defense team.
Rules for both teams collectively:
● The point will not be considered if the players hit the ball with their fist.
● No player is allowed to touch the ball when it is moving downwards towards the basket.
● The foul rule applies for every player including the offense players.
● Both the teams have 5 players in the court at one time but if they want then, the players can be replaced.
● Every team is appointed 24 seconds to shoot the ball. If the ball touches the rim or goes in the basket in both the cases they have 24 seconds for the shot. And, if the ball doesn’t go in the basket then the time is started again for another 24 seconds.
Conclusion:-
Basketball is a healthy sport just like the other ones. It is ranked at 3rd position after Football and Cricket, in the list of the most popular sports across the world. Playing a game gives exposure to new things and provides you with new chances but at the same time every game has its own rules and it must be played according to those rules. The original manuscript of the basketball rules, which was made by James Naismith is the most expensive manuscript of all the times. The rules are created due to certain reasons and to maintain the discipline too. And I guess the one reason must be to test your patience that how much sports man spirit do you have. When you are following the rules, the game becomes more interesting and challenging, because you have to be in certain limits and in those limits you have to score and give your best and this is what a games actually teaches you!
