Home renovation and interior designing is a challenging task that requires a lot of thought process and its execution. The process becomes a little more challenging if you have a smaller space that you are designing. A smaller space in no way means that you won’t be able to have the home of your dreams; it just means that you will have to plan a bit more cleverly so that you are able to get the most out of it.

The main intention in mind, while designing a small space, should be to maximize functionality and choose such design elements that will help increase the visual space and give the illusion of a relatively larger area. If you are able to achieve that, it means you have been successful in designing your home to the best of your capabilities.

In this article, we will discuss some of the ways in which you can design your smaller space and make it look no less than a bigger house. For inspiration, we will also be considering some interior designs by Space Factor, which is an experienced interior design company of Singapore. Their aim is to create the perfect homes for their clients that are desirable as well as affordable.

So without any more wait, let’s discuss some of the interior design ideas which you can employ in a small space.

Use Multipurpose Furniture

One of the most important factors to consider while designing a small space is that the area needs to be clutter-free in order to give the illusion of spaciousness. However, this is easier said than done since you need some things which are essential and whether you like it or not, there is bound to be stuff that takes up space. So what can you do about it? In such a case, you have the option of using such furniture that offers you more functionality so you end up putting less furniture in your home. For example, you can get a sofa cum bed that can be used both as a sofa and a bed based on your needs. Similarly, you can choose such sitting stools or tables that have storage sections underneath. This way, one piece of furniture will serve two purposes. Similarly, you can add a wooden stand that can be folded when not needed and can be opened whenever to use it for dining or studying purposes. You can also acquire a fireplace tv stand. With this, you will save up a lot of space since you have an electric fireplace and a TV stand all in one place.

Small Kitchen Configuratio

A smaller kitchen configuration may be a bit hard to achieve but it is not impossible. As an inspiration, onsider the following kitchen design by Space Factor where a kitchen has been added in a small space but it does not look cramped at all. It is an open concept kitchen with an L-shape counter on one side and another counter parallel to it. This setting provides ample counter space in a small area. A sleek table on one of its sides is used as a small dining table which is enough for two persons. Covered and open shelves on both sides in the kitchen also offer enough space for kitchen storage.

Make Use Of Multi Purpose Carpentry

Another clever idea for smaller spaces is to incorporate such carpentry that serves multiple purposes. This also means using sleek carpentry that takes less space but gives maximum functionality. As an example, consider the following image of the design by Space Factor where the efficient use of carpentry has resulted in a fully functional bedroom plus study in quite a small room. The bed is a platform bed where its headboard is also a closet. Besides it, we find a sleek table that has enough storage compartments and it doubles as the study table. So in a very small room, you have maximum functionality.

Choose Light Colors For The Interior

Another idea for making a small space look big is to use light colors for the interior. Light colors automatically create the illusion of a bigger space as opposed to darker colors which make the area look cramped and gloomy. The colors which you can choose include white, offwhite, beige, and other pastel shades.

Incorporate Hidden Storage

One more idea that works well for smaller spaces is to incorporate hidden storage in various elements of the house. As discussed above, you can add hidden storage in sofas and tables. Similarly, you can also add some forms of storage areas in benches and footrests. As can be seen in the following image, the platform bed has been used to create additional storage space. Here, the drawers underneath the bed serve as storage spaces. The TV console also has hidden storage compartments. It is simply amazing how much functionality has been added in this small room without making it look tacky or cramped. On the contrary, it gives a very modern and minimalist vibe.

Add Plenty Of Lights

The last idea which you can use in your small home to make it look bigger is to add plenty of lights throughout the house. Adding huge, full-length windows that allow plenty of sunlight to flow in. Add different forms of lighting such as track lights, spotlights, chandeliers, and indirect lighting to not only give a modern effect in the house but also to give an open and spacious illusion.
