Motorcycles are a popular form of transport, but they’re also dangerous. With 16 million motorcycles on the roads in the US alone, it’s important that riders take all safety precautions to keep themselves and others safe. Here are not commonly known safety facts for motorcycle riders:
- Sixty-two percent of motorcycle accidents in the post-crash phase involved fuel leaks and spills, presenting a risk of fire that is uncommon in other types of motor vehicle accidents.
- Most motorcycle accident victims are craftsmen, laborers, and students. Professionals, sales staff, and craftspeople are underrepresented among the injured.
- Motorcycle drivers with recent prior traffic infractions and collisions are overrepresented in the accident statistics.
- Although motorcyclists are supposed to receive training before riding, 92 percent were self-taught or learned from family or friends. Motorcycle rider training experience is related to fewer injuries in the event of an accident and helps prevent accidents.
- More than half of the motorcycle accident riders had less than five months of experience on the wrecked bike, yet they had almost three years of street riding expertise. Dirt bike riders are underrepresented in the accident statistics, despite the fact that they make up a significant portion (about 50%) of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities.
- Alcohol is involved in almost half of all fatal accidents.
